Why the Change Was Needed for Voter Registration Nepal 2082
The deadline for voter registration is 30 Kartik, so as the deadline gets closer, election offices across Nepal have seen a huge surge in applicants. Due to the high demand, many people have been facing issues and have complained about it. So, to solve this Election Commission of Nepal has taken this step.
The complaints were:
- Long queues at the election offices
- Technical issues like server breakdowns
- Delays in processing biometric data
In response, Prime Minister Sushila Karki initiated a meeting between the Election Commission and the National Identity Card and Registration Department to find a solution. As a result, A meeting held at Singha Durbar on Wednesday afternoon resulted in an important agreement between the two offices. The Election Commission can now directly access biometric details such as fingerprints, photos, and digital signatures from the National ID database.
For this, Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari ensured that technical teams from both departments are working overnight to integrate the system and start implementation from Thursday. So, from this Thursday, this system will be fully implemented. People who have already filled out the online voter registration form but haven’t completed biometric verification will now have their data automatically fetched from the National ID system. To this, Director General Namraj Ghimire of the National ID and Registration Department added
“Citizens must provide their National ID number during online pre-enrollment. The department will then provide its biometric data to the Commission for voter registration.”

This decision eliminates one of the biggest inconveniences faced by Nepali citizens, where people used to repeat the same biometric submissions for different government services. With this integration, people can easily get registered on the voter list.

In regard to this, the Prime Minister’s Office even sent a three-point letter to the Commission urging immediate action to address these issues.
