Madhesh province has 8 districts, in which Saptari, Siraha, Dhanusha, Mahottari, Sarlahi, Rautahat, Bara, and Parsa. The headquarters of this province is in Janakpurdham, which is called Janakpur. This place is an important religious and cultural center for Nepal as well as for tourism. People in Madhesh speak many languages, such as Maithili, Bhojpuri, Bajjika, and Nepali, and follow mainly Hinduism and Islam. The main source of income of this province is Agriculture, and this is the province that produces large amounts of rice, wheat, sugarcane, and vegetables. The region also has busy trade routes with India, especially through Birgunj.
Although Madhesh has great economic potential, it still faces challenges like poverty, unemployment, and frequent floods during the monsoon season. Despite these issues, its culture, festivals, fertile land, and strategic location make it one of Nepal’s most important regions.
Before the constitution of Nepal 2072, there was no provincial system in Nepal, but after the constitution of Nepal 2072, Nepal was divided into 7 provinces. Madhesh Province was originally known as Province No. 2. Madhesh Province got its name from the word “Madhesh,” which is commonly used in Nepal to refer to the Terai plains, which is the southern lowland region bordering India. The people living in this region are often called “Madhesi”, and the culture, language, and lifestyle of the area are known as “Madheshi culture”.
