What is eSewa?

eSewa is a mobile-based digital wallet and online payment gateway that allows users to send/receive money and make payments from their smartphones. It works as a cashless and cardless payment solution, making day-to-day transactions simple, fast, and secure. It is Nepal’s first and most popular digital wallet, launched in 2009. It has become one of the most trusted platforms for online payments, mobile top-ups, utility bills, bank transfers, QR payments, and everyday financial services. What is eSewa Circle?

It is a social-payment feature within the eSewa app that allows users to interact more “socially” with each other in terms of payments. It was introduced in version 5.5.28 (in November 2025).

Features:

  • Split bills: This feature of Circle divides the cost among friends (for example, for dinner, rent, or shared expenses). So, if you are in a group and one person has to bear all the expenses, then this is the perfect feature for them to use.
  • Send gifts: You can send money as a gift to people in your circle.
  • Peer-to-peer payments: It also allows you to make payments between friends or people in your circle easily.

How to add friends in eSewa Circle?

Step 1: Open the eSewa App on your smartphone

Step 2: Go to Circle (you can search it on the search option or click on your Display picture situated on the top left side of your smartphone)

Step 3: Select Display Picture for Circle

Step 4: Set your unique name for it (all the characters should be in lowercase)

Step 5: Tap “Add Friend” / “Invite Friends”

You will see options like:

  • Add Friend
  • Invite
  • Create Circle
  • Or a “+” icon

You can add friends in 3 ways:

  1. Using Phone Number
  • Enter your friend’s eSewa-registered mobile number.
  • Send the request.
  • Your friend must accept the request to join your circle.
  1. From Contacts
  • Allow eSewa to access your contact list.
  • Select any contact who has an eSewa account.
  • Send a Circle request.
  1. Using QR Code
  • Your friend can show their eSewa QR.
  • Scan it and add them directly.

Step 6: Wait for Confirmation

Your Friends need to accept friend requests like a social media platform.

Step 7: Once your friends get connected in the circle. You can create a group like a social media platform.

Advantages:

Convenience
• Bill Split features make it easier since it does everything automatically.
• You can share all your expenses like rent, utilities, and group dinners effortlessly, which streamlines money tracking.

Socially Interactive Payments
• You can create a circle of your close friends, making it more personal and less like just a transaction.

Integrated with eSewa
• No need for any other app or tools to manage or share payments since it’s built into the app.
• It uses your existing eSewa wallet balance, so it’s faster than bank transfers.

Encourages Cashless Transactions
• For younger users or friends who hang out a lot, this encourages digital rather than cash settlements.
• Helps promote a more cashless lifestyle among peer groups.

Potential Limitations and Risks

  • Trust and Misuse: If someone in the circle makes a mistake or uses it wrongly, it can cause problems or arguments between the friends.
  • Security: There is a risk if someone’s account gets hacked.
  • App Requirement: Both people must have eSewa and use Circle; it won’t work otherwise.
  • Fees: Some payments might have small charges depending on eSewa’s rules.
  • Limits: There may be a maximum amount you can send or receive in Circle.
